Ken: What were you doing, Jack? What did you see?

Jack: It was half past nine last night and I was getting ready for bed. I heard some strange noise outside while I was brushing my teeth. I wondered what was happening and I went to the window and looked out. To my surprise, I saw a bright yellow green light in the sky.

May: Maybe the light you saw was a UFO! Or a ghost! A few years ago, an American man saw a flying saucer(飞碟) while he was driving along a road. He also saw some strange yellow light. You have heard about it, haven’t you?

Ken: Don’t be imaginative, May. Jack didn’t see anything, or anybody. It wasn’t a ghost. It was probably a plane, or a shooting star. Perhaps Jack just made a horrible dream!

Jack: I am very serious. I did see something. The light disappeared and then suddenly some “tiny people” were standing in the garden. There were four of them. Two of them ate some flowers in the garden.

Ken: Oh, come on, Jack. I really doubt what you have said.

Jack: I am not joking! One of the people was looking at me through the window.

May: Really? What did it look like? Were you frightened?

Jack: Its whole body was green. It had no ears and nose. Its hands were huge. Its eyes were very big and looked like eggs. It looked at me and I could hardly move.

  Ken: What happened then?

2 Make Greek or Roman food. Mrs Jones has a list of recipes(菜谱) from ancient Greece and Rome. You may make American food, but be sure to give it a special, mythological(神话的) name. For example, call your chocolate cake “Zeus's Delight.” This is a great way to practice your skills in the kitchen.

3 Create a work of art for the museum. Be sure your artwork shows ancient Greek or Roman culture. Artworks may include sculptures, paintings, mosaics, drawings or models. The museum is a great place to show off your artistic talent.

4 Perform a new short performance, song or dance for the talent show. Rewrite your favorite Greek myth(神话) by using modern language, or change the words of a popular song to tell a Greek or Roman story. Send your creative ideas to your English teacher for agreement. You must first perform for a group of teachers. The teachers choose the BEST performance groups for the talent show, so be sure your group has prepared for it.

Tom arrived at the New York airport two hours before the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts, a jacket, two pairs of socks, a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack(背包), which was very full, but he didn’t have any other luggage(行李). Tom needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter(柜台). Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package(包裹).

“Give this package to Jean-Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it. I think you can find him easily,” Tony said,” You don’t have any luggage, right?”

“Only this backpack,” Tom answered. ”You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”

“That’s right. One carry-on bag is fine. Have a good trip.”

  “Thanks.”

Is Tom a criminal ? Not at all. He is an air-courier. And he paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris. Air couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries. Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day. Often, the only way they can do this is to use an air-courier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air courier, but it is quick.

Every year about 80,000 people worldwide travel as air couriers. The number of tickets for courier travel is growing by about 10 percent a year. However, air-courier travel isn’t for everyone. But if you have very little money, can be flexible (灵活的) about your travel plans, and don’t mind wearing the same clothes for a week, it can be a great way to take a vacation!

  51. An air courier is a person who_________

A.manages a business company in foreign countries

  B.organizes international flights for tourists

C.travels around the world with cheap tickets

D.delivers papers and packages to foreign countries.

52.One of the disadvantages of traveling as an air courier is that he _________.

A.cannot decide when and where to travel B.cannot take any luggage with him

C.has to wear two pairs of shoes D.saves little money from travel

53.The writer of the text mainly_________.

A.describes the activities of a law-breaker B.suggests an ideal way to everyone for traveling

C.argues against the air-courier travel D.tells us about a developing business

  D

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins(维生素) and other nutrients(营养物)that enter our body.

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw(生的) vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene(番茄红素), the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. “There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better,” says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. “For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful.”

A number decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying(油炸) or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

54.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.

  A. people should eat more vegetables B. the way people eat vegetables is important

  C. eating vegetables is good for us D. how much vegetables one should eat

55.The people who eat the raw vegetables for a long time will ________.

  A. have the eyes problems B. have heart disease

  C. be in need of lycopene D. hate eating tomatoes

56.The following decide how the vegetables do good to people EXCEPT ________.

  A. the place where the vegetables are grown B. the way how the vegetables are stored

  C. the way how the vegetables are prepared D. the price at which the vegetable are sold

57.From the last paragraph, we can know ________.

  A. it's better to cook vegetables with the fat

  B. the more fat in the cooking, the fewer vegetables people will eat

  C. it's better to cook the vegetables without salt

Most of us have never thought about building an educational toy by ourselves. If we need a learning toy or something, we simply go to the nearest store and buy it. However, things are not as easy in third world countries. With families even having no food to put on the table, buying toys, especially the educational ones, is the last thing on the parents’ minds.

So how can one get these kids interested in science? This was a question that worried the Indian engineer Arvind Gupta so much that he decided to leave his job and spend his life making toys from things that people no longer want or need!

Mr. Gupta began teaching in the 1970s. While still an engineering student at the Indian College of Technology, he volunteered to teach the children who could not afford to go to school. After his graduation, he found a good job at India’s Tata Motors and spent the next five years designing cars.

But he soon realized that this was not something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So he took a year’s training cours e and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program whose aim was to make science fun and exciting for poor children using common materials.

Mr. Gupta found the whole project so intereting that he decided to leave his high-paying job and pay his attention to designing educational toys that were not only cheap and easy to build, but are also full of scientific principles(科学原理), so that children could get interested in this interesting subject.

When the Internet started becoming a more widespread learning tool, Mr. Gupta created a Toys from Trash website and also recorded over 250 YouTube videos.

Today, over 50,000 children and teachers visit the website daily to download the videos for the toy creations developed from cool science. Some young children have become so inspired (鼓舞)that they have even won international science competitions with the help of his creations.
